Update: Nintendo has released a statement to Polygon
confirming that users will still be able to Wii, DS and DSi games in
offline mode. “Other online functionality on Wii and Nintendo DS, such
as access to the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo DSi Shop and
video-on-demand services, are also not affected at this time,” according
to Nintendo. The global termination of the service will take place May
20, 2014 worldwide.
Online play for 3DS and Wii U will be unaffected, aside from Wii U’s
Wii mode and “DS games played on Nintendo 3DS family systems.”

Wi-Fi service for Wii and DS will be shutting down as of May 20, Nintendo of Japan announced on Wednesday.
The shutdown will affect the likes of online play, matchmaking and
leaderboards for DS/DSi and Wii users alike. However, the Wii Shop
Channel and DSi Shop will remain unaffected for the time being, along
with the Wii’s Delivery Channel, Hulu, Netflix, Internet Channel and
